Mary Bess found a house for us when we arrived in Fayetteville in 1967; she introduced me and others to the history department and the League of Women Voters and anybody else that I would need as a mother of three in a new place. We visited her cabin at Beaver Lake. Then she and Paige moved to all the places that I and my husband had lived in: Tempe Arizona, Columbia, South Carolina and finally Dayton Ohio, our hometown, where she and Paige were quite celebrities. My mother in Dayton sent me all the news and society pages featuring their Wright State University President and Mary Bess. When they returned to Fayetteville we were most happy to resume our friendship—she was a wonderful cook and hostess. She had a full and wonderful life and I wish her children and grandchildren the same.
